Nowadays most of the pearls used for making jewelry are cultured
pearls. Cultured pearls are made by planting a core into pearl oyster.
There are different types of cultured pearls available for the jewelry
in the market. These are Akoya Pearl, Tahitian & South Sea Pearl,
and Freshwater Pearl. The method of culturing the pearls was developed
by William Sawville Kent first with the help of Tatsuhei Mise and
Tokichi Nishikawa.
The conventional and brilliance of pearls has enchanted and fascinated rich emperors for decades. This gorgeous jewel is known to signify majesty, precision and harmony of a lady. A pearl jewelry indicates all of these, predominantly for the lucky people.
The value of a pearl in jewelry is measured by the amalgamation of the luster, color, size, lack of surface blemish and evenness that are proper for the good quality pearl. Amongst All the factors Luster is the main quality which can differentiate the good quality pearl form the bad quality. According to the jewelers this should be the primary consideration while purchasing a pearl. However rests of the factors are equally important but those come after luster. Also the size of a pearl values its valuation. Large in size means big in amount. This is very interesting to know that the perfectly round shaped pearl is rare and very costly. Teardrop shaped pearls are mostly used in the jewelry like pendants.
